Madame Samm is always coming up with great blog hop ideas and when I saw the announcement for this Pin It Blog Hop, I sent in my "Yes, please me!" email right away.
I knew exactly what I wanted to make.
Now pin cushions aren't terribly complicated to make but given the fact that since I started quilting 4 years ago, I have never made anything other than quilts, this was a new adventure for me.
Of course I didn't pick an easy one to start with...I had to pick something a bit more challenging...this has been on my "To Make" list for quite a while.
Being the overachiever that I can be at times, I didn't just make 1, I made 3.
It was a tutorial by Elizabeth Hartman of Oh, Fransson! for Sew Mama Sew. If you want to make one yourself, the tutorial can be found here. I used Kate Spain's Fandango fabrics and started by making the bags.
Let me tell you, sewing the lining and the outer fabric together was a little bit of a wrangling job (the arm of my machine was just a bit too long) but I got it done.
Next came the organizers. Yes one is made in a different fabric for a reason. These weren't tough to do, just a bunch of steps.
Part 3 was making the weight bags to go into the pincushion. The tutorial called for rice but I used crushed walnut shells instead.
Up next was making the actual pin cushion. Easy peasy.
The pin cushions were then sewn to the organizer and Ta Da!
Now on to what was the hardest part of all....stuffing those filled bags of crushed walnut shells inside the pic cushion cover. That was Not. An. Easy. Task. Note to self...next time make the bag a tad bit smaller than the instructions state.
I persevered and now they all are lined up together. A trio of weighted pin cushion organizers, each one slightly different.
Here you can see how they work with the scrap bag attached and hanging off the edge as if off your sewing table. I made the organizer pockets to fit a seam ripper, a small pair of scissors and one other slot for anything else you might need it for.

This one was gifted to my BFF as part of her birthday goody bag. A 2nd one was gifted to the Judy as part of my It's A Sister Thing Secret Pal Swap.
And the 3rd one? You assume that I'm keeping this one for myself?
Yes it does look great next to my Lucy
Yes it does look great next to my Lucy
but No this one isn't for me either.
This last one is for one of you!
Don't worry, I'll be making myself one soon with fabrics that I'm totally Gaga over.
I purposely made this one to send off to a new home.

Me? I like them both ... ;) Pat

ReplyDeleteLovely, great job. Thanks for sharing. Anything with pumpkin is good with me.
ReplyDeleteOh I made one of those pincushion/thread catcher/tool holders too years ago. I made my pincushion out of an old felted wool sweater and covered a ceramic tile in fabric and glued the pincushion to it to weigh it down, then put that grippy shelf liner under it so it stays put. I love mine and use it all the time. Thanks for the giveaway, but if you pick me, please give it to someone else, since I already have one. Yours is lovely in those colors.
ReplyDeleteI was going to make one of these too for the hop but didn't get it done... maybe I was meant to win your adorable one instead! LOL
ReplyDeleteI tried a pumpkin mocha latte at our local coffee shop the other day and now I'm going to have to search for pumpkin creamer on my next grocery trip. Yummy!
