Madame Samm is always coming up with great blog hop ideas and when I saw the announcement for this Pin It Blog Hop, I sent in my "Yes, please me!" email right away.
I knew exactly what I wanted to make.
Now pin cushions aren't terribly complicated to make but given the fact that since I started quilting 4 years ago, I have never made anything other than quilts, this was a new adventure for me.
Of course I didn't pick an easy one to start with...I had to pick something a bit more challenging...this has been on my "To Make" list for quite a while.
Being the overachiever that I can be at times, I didn't just make 1, I made 3.
It was a tutorial by Elizabeth Hartman of Oh, Fransson! for Sew Mama Sew. If you want to make one yourself, the tutorial can be found here. I used Kate Spain's Fandango fabrics and started by making the bags.
Let me tell you, sewing the lining and the outer fabric together was a little bit of a wrangling job (the arm of my machine was just a bit too long) but I got it done.
Next came the organizers. Yes one is made in a different fabric for a reason. These weren't tough to do, just a bunch of steps.
Part 3 was making the weight bags to go into the pincushion. The tutorial called for rice but I used crushed walnut shells instead.
Up next was making the actual pin cushion. Easy peasy.
The pin cushions were then sewn to the organizer and Ta Da!
Now on to what was the hardest part of all....stuffing those filled bags of crushed walnut shells inside the pic cushion cover. That was Not. An. Easy. Task. Note to self...next time make the bag a tad bit smaller than the instructions state.
I persevered and now they all are lined up together. A trio of weighted pin cushion organizers, each one slightly different.
Here you can see how they work with the scrap bag attached and hanging off the edge as if off your sewing table. I made the organizer pockets to fit a seam ripper, a small pair of scissors and one other slot for anything else you might need it for.

This one was gifted to my BFF as part of her birthday goody bag. A 2nd one was gifted to the Judy as part of my It's A Sister Thing Secret Pal Swap.
And the 3rd one? You assume that I'm keeping this one for myself?
Yes it does look great next to my Lucy
Yes it does look great next to my Lucy
but No this one isn't for me either.
This last one is for one of you!
Don't worry, I'll be making myself one soon with fabrics that I'm totally Gaga over.
I purposely made this one to send off to a new home.

Make sure when you make yours you can get the crushed walnuts inside! They are all lovely! :)
I love the fact that your thread catcher buttons on! The one I have is attached and is hard to empty completely when I am collecting my trash...the disconnect is a great idea! My favorite fall dinner is stew with warm biscuits!
These are wonderful...pretty and so useful! Favorite Fall recipe is a pot of homemade chili...perfect for those cooler days. Thanks for the chance!
Very cute. I like this fabric line and it looks lovely in your pincushion thread catchers. Thanks for sharing! Apple and pumpkin pies are my favorite fall recipe ... yes, I know that is two, but I always make both at the same time as some in my family prefer apple and some pumpkin so my recipe calls for making three crusts and two pies. Me? I like them both ... ;) Pat
So sweet, Michele! A terrific idea, so practical and pretty. My favorite fall recipe is for pumpkin soup. A little curry, a little nutmeg, oh, mmm. Mouth is watering. Hope all is well in your crayon box!
These are just adorable! I love the fabrics you used!
One of my favorite fall recipes is Pecan Pie. We have a huge pecan tree behind the house and i love to pick up fresh pecans and shell them for a pie. It is so good using fresh pecans.

I love your pincushion organizer! It looks amazing. Don't worry... I have notes to self on every project I undertake. I think it is just part of the sewing process. I am making owls right now...and every one (4 to give away) is different....due to the notes to self thing. Thanks for the chance to win one of those cutesies!

Very pretty, Michele. I really like these. There is a place to keep every thing you need close by your machine. In the Fall I like to make fresh pumpkin pie. Thank you for the giveaway.

This pincushion is definitely on top of my "to do" list, very nice! For fall recipes I love soup, or how about baklava http://travelthrugreece.blogspot.gr/2012/11/baklava-recipe.html
Lovely, great job. Thanks for sharing. Anything with pumpkin is good with me.
Oh I made one of those pincushion/thread catcher/tool holders too years ago. I made my pincushion out of an old felted wool sweater and covered a ceramic tile in fabric and glued the pincushion to it to weigh it down, then put that grippy shelf liner under it so it stays put. I love mine and use it all the time. Thanks for the giveaway, but if you pick me, please give it to someone else, since I already have one. Yours is lovely in those colors.
I was going to make one of these too for the hop but didn't get it done... maybe I was meant to win your adorable one instead! LOL
I tried a pumpkin mocha latte at our local coffee shop the other day and now I'm going to have to search for pumpkin creamer on my next grocery trip. Yummy!

the scrap basket is wonderful. I could use one - I am fearful of having a litterbin close to the sewing machine as I fear tossing scissors or other odd tools falling in to the basket! This is a great idea - lovely color of fabric, too
thx for sharing
shared a link on FB
My favorite fall recipe is an easy one - a large jar of Spicy V8 juice, a large can of chicken broth, a large package of fresh cheese tortellini, and a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. Crusty rolls with sharp cheddar cheese chunks makes a nice side dish for this quick and easy dinner!

I love that pin cushion/scrap basket. My favorite fall recipe is beef stew and dumplings.
These are just adorable - love those fabrics. I wonder if the walnut shells made the stuffing a bit tougher cuz they don't 'squeeze down' like polyfil would do.
I follow with GFC and Feedly.
My favorite fall recipe is pumpkin pie and I seriously need this pincushion organizer. I did download the pattern to make it myself if I don't win.

You did a great job on your threadcatcher/organizer/pincushions. This looks like a really cool pattern and I did just print it off. I used a funnel to put the crushed walnut shells in a recent project, and maybe you did as well.

Wow, those are gorgeous! I love the use of the large print, I always have a heck of a time figuring out how to use them. My favorite fall recipe is pumpkin pie, my family says I am the Queen of Pumpkin Pies, probably because I insist on making them every year (but that way they turn out good, not burnt!) Hahaha! Thank you for the opportunity to win!
