When Lesley emailed and told me that she and Madame Samm decided to extended this hop 2 days and had openings, I jumped right in. And as usual, I had all sorts of ideas of all the blocks I wanted to make. But 2 things got in the way....I have a severe lack of Christmas fabrics in my stash and time was just not on my side.
The two Tribute to Danny quilts and the softball tournament itself ate up a boat load of my free time and then that previously mentioned little trip to the Emergency Room with my baby girl the other day really messed with my well planned out schedule.
Oh well, these things happen. At least I was able to accomplish a couple of block to share with you.
The inspiration for both blocks came from Quiltmakers 100 Blocks, Volume 4. This first one I took notice of when I got the magazine and promptly turned the edge of the page down. Now was my chance to make it. It is #380 Perfect Petals. The sample was done in shades of red with white background and a gold center. I knew that Santa Lesley would tisk, tisk me if I forgot to add in some Green, so I did. Here is my version.
BTW...I have wanted one of these wire hangers ever since I saw them on the Ghastlies Hop and I finally gave in and bought one. I am so glad that I did. I have a great place to put it and I plan on making a load of blocks to rotate on it frequently. If you don't already own one of these, you should go and get one fast.
Ok so back to the regularly scheduled program...
My 2nd block is also from the same issue, #395 Neapolitan. The sample was done in Pinks and Browns on a cream background. I wanted to a totally Red and White Candy Cane version but I didn't have enough various pieces of red fabrics large enough. Dag-nabit! (Gotta keep this blog clean, ya know) This Red, White and Green version came out pretty cool too.
I really like them both and because of that I haven't decided if I will just finish them to display on my wire hanger or if I want to make more and create something bigger, like another table runner or wall hanging. Decision, decisions!
Honestly I wasn't really in the mood to tear through all my holiday decoration boxes to find the perfect accessories for this photo shoot so I found the next best thing....my favorite red Lobster buddy...he is wearing Green after all...so he is the perfect colors, right? And as someone else asked for our dream place to spend Christmas and I immediately thought of the beach, he seemed fitting for this Think Christmas party.
So by now you are wondering where are the details on my giveaway! I know how all of you think. This took a bit of thinking on my part because as I said before, I just don't have a lot of holiday-ish fabrics even to offer up. Instead I am offering to send to the winner their own version of either of my 2 blocks in the colors of their choice so they have it to display on their wire hanger. I might even put in another surprise or two in the package.

ReplyDeleteBoth blocks are great, but I love the 2nd one in particular. As for my favourite food, well it could be Christmas pud, or mince pies, but really, it's all the dishes of Chinese takeaway that we always have on Christmas Eve, when as many of the family all come round and we eat it together.
ReplyDelete"Real Ambrosia" as my grandmother used to call it...made with using only fresh oranges and fresh coconut[as still in the huge outer hull fresh]. Sadly it remains a memory, since she died, no one has been able to make it the way she used to....but as I type, I can still taste the yummy goodness! :D So now each year, I make her cranberry salad....that still tastes just like the way she used to make it! :D

My favourite food at Christmas is my Christmas cookies. I don't make a lot of "fancy" cookies throughout the year, so at Christmas I get out all of the family recipes and make them up. I like your first block the msot, but I also like your "Christmas" lobster!

Then the Neapolitan (not in the icecream colours of cream, pink, brown) but it turned out really well wouldn't know you didn't have the fabric. My favourite food at Christmas are a toss up between fruit mince pies or dark fruitcake. Yum. (Actually most food including lobster-woops)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite food of the season is a great cookie that came down from Great Grandmother. It is called Mama Grayce's Originals(can you tell her name was Grayce?). It is a delicate pastry crust that is filled with a brown sugar and cocoanut filling and glazed with either an orange or lemon coating. Yummy!

ReplyDeleteYour blocks are lovely, I would love either one! One of my favorite Holiday foods that I only get once a year is Grandma's pie. It's not a sweet pie, it's made with hamburger, sausage and pototoes. It makes a quick dinner when I'm busy with Christmas stuff. My mom makes each of us girls one every year day after Thanksgiving.

Love your blocks. Every year I make perogis (a Slovak dumpling) by hand for Christmas Eve. It's an all day affair making these but my family really loves them. You have to roll the dough out very thin and it's getting difficult with my arthritis. This year for my birthday my kids went in together to buy me a pasta maker - I know they think it will get me to make my perogis more often (ha ha).

ReplyDeleteI love the perfect petals block and I love it in the Christmas colors. I love my rack too. I also got the longer one and love it too. it fits perfectly on my buffet. For a chance at your giveaway I love Corn pudding. I go to my nieces for dinner and one of her inlaws brings it every year.

ReplyDeleteA favorite of mine at the holiday would be Ambrosia the way my mama used to make. I've tried to get the same wonderful combo of flavors from the oranges, pineapple, coconut, etc. but it never has that "Mama Made It" taste. Wonderful memories from so long ago.

ReplyDeleteGolly, I like both of your blocks so it would be a difficult choice. At Christmas time I like to make a version of Wassail that I started making when I taught middle school Home Economics. I lIke it because it contains all the "right" spices and leaves your house smelling like the holidays even if you have no decorations up yet. I start making it at Thanksgiving and sometimes give it to family members to take home as it's a non-alcoholic drink that keeps you warm. My students loved it and would usually take the recipe home and make it for their families. Thanks for sharing your great blocks and an opportunity to win one. If I won a block I would add to it and make a table runner or wall hanging as I don't have a place for that wire stand.

I like both your blocks. I made the second one for one of my block swap partners cause I liked it so much - different colours though. Please tell me where you got the little block hanger as I'd like to get one. My favourite Christmas food is the English trifle that we always had only at Christmas when I was young. Now I usually make it twice as the sponge cake recipe makes enough for two. We have it at Christmas and then again at our anniversary in mid January.

ReplyDeleteThere are a few foods that I think of when I think of Christmas- I make Nuts and Bolts - a snack mix of cereals, nuts and other savory foods and my mother's shortbread and fudge. All are yummy and are not made for other times of year. I especially like Christmas as I was married the day after Christmas.

Hiya! I love your blocks, especially the Perfect Petals. I'd love to have it in any bright colors combo. Love the Lobster, he does remind me of the beach. I LOVE fruitcake. I used to have a recipe (gotta find it again) of a no-bake fruitcake. It used graham cracker crumbs and orange juice to hold it all together. YUMMY!!! Not too sweet, but filled with all the goodies. ReplyDeleteI love both of your blocks but the first one is my favorite and those colors are just fine. I'm right there with you on the hangers, I had to go out and buy two of them. I like making blocks and make them to fit these little hangers, instant satisfaction! I like to make the Chex mix. I make several different ones and have them for the grandkids. I guess their favorite (and mine too) is the mix that you put chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar on. I call it Puppy Mix but I'm not sure if that is the official name. ReplyDeleteHmmm...I guess we have prime rib about every-other year for Christmas dinner. Just depends on how well the Sale price is on prime rib around that time, lol. Your blocks are fun, and especially good job if you put them together with limited time!

Thank you for the post of your lovely blocks. Though we have sweet potatoes throughout the year, sweetpotato souffle (with marshmellows on top) is THE dish at Christmas time.

ReplyDeleteBeing Dutch, then transplanted into Canada 30 plus years ago, we still make "Oliebollen and Appelflappen" for New Years Eve! (Oliebollen: dough with raisins fried in oil, Appelflappen: slices of apple swiped thru a batter, and then also deep fried.) It makes the house stink like oil, but well worth the effort.....
ReplyDeleteI make "Pasan's Bread" only at holiday time- it used to be called Harp's Fruitcake but fruitcake conjurs up the thought of candied fruit and this only has dried fruit in it. oh so yummy. Pasan is what I called my dad and it's his great grandma's recipe.

Your blocks are beautiful, thanks for sharing. The one special holiday dish is really a candy that I only allow myself to make is Peanut Butter Balls, they are so good that I can't stay out of them.

My favorite treat this past Christmas was the mini pretzel with a rolo candy on top and then a pecan on top of that! Sort of a variation of a turtle! Thanks for the giveaway.
